Some years ago, Richard planted a few short rows of Merlot to see how the variety would perform in our vineyard. In subsequent years, after a few trips to Spain, he grafted a couple of rows of Pinot Noir across to Tempranillo. The Merlot and Tempranillo have been producing stunning fruit for a number of years now but unfortunately not enough to make a commercial quantity of wine.  Since vintage 2021, we have been fortunate to purchase some Syrah (Shiraz) grapes from a nearby vineyard in the Tumbarumba Wine Region so our Merlot and Tempranillo were blended with the Shiraz to make a "nouveau" style wine celebrating the vibrant and young fruit flavours of the grapes – oak has been given the back seat. This wine will age well but why bother – it has been crafted to drink now.

What Alex Mackay (our winemaker) did

The grapes were fermented separately. They underwent a moderately warm fermentation over 14 days, managed by pumpover and rack and return. They were then pressed into a mix of new and neutral French oak (20% new) for just four months before filtering and bottling in September 2022.

What the wine says

Serve me at room temperature. In summer, chill me slightly.

What others are saying

Oh wow! This is what Richard said when this blend was first released in 2021. He is still loving this wine and will tell you it goes perfectly with chargrilled lamb.
